The Holy Apostle Thomas is the disciple of Christ who, before going to Lazarus – the brother of Martha and Mary, when he saw Christ’s determination, despite all the danger, to go and wake Lazarus from death, said: “Let us also go, that we may die with him” (John 11:16).

Thus, the Apostle Thomas, through his request to touch the wounds of Christ, does not express any unbelief, but a deep longing from personal experience to know the Risen Christ, and not simply to hear about Him from others – regardless of whether they were Apostles or the Bishops, presbyters, monks of today, or even to read from books – be it the Holy Gospel itself or not. As the Apostle Paul says: “Yet indeed I also count all things loss for the excellence of the knowledge of Christ Jesus my Lord, for whom I have suffered the loss of all things, and count them as rubbish, that I may gain Christ” (Phil. 3:8).

Confirmation of that which I am saying is the fact that he is the only Apostle who touched the wounds of Christ, and the Holy Church confirms the longing for the knowledge of God of this supreme Apostle by designating the first Sunday after the Resurrection as “Thomas’ Sunday” and thus calls all Her children to the same longing.

And today we can also touch the wounds of Christ every time we make an effort to heal them – spiritually and physically, in one of the least of His brothers – even more than the Apostle. The double greeting “peace be with you” with which the God-Man Christ greets the Apostles, the first time is to deliver them from fear and anxiety, and the second time to deliver them from euphoria.

The behaviour of those at the first stage of spiritual development – the purification of the heart from passions – is hesitant and they need peace, in contrast to the stable behaviour of the enlightened or deified ones – such as the myrrh-bearing women, who hear the greeting: “rejoice”!

Светиот Апостол Тома е ученикот Христов кој пред одењето при Лазар – братот на Марта и Марија, кога ја виде решителноста Христова, и покрај целата опасност, да отиде и да го разбуди Лазар од смртта, рече: „Да отидеме и ние да умреме со него“ (Јован 11, 16).

Така, Апостолот Тома преку барањето да се допре до раните Христови не изразува никакво неверие, туку длабок копнеж од личен опит да Го познае Воскреснатиот Христос, а не само да слуша за Него од другите – па биле тие Апостоли или денес Епископи, презвитери, монаси, или само да чита од книги – па било тоа и самото Свето Евангелие. Како што вели Апостолот Павле: „Сметам дека и сè друго е штета спрема преважното познавање на Христа Исуса, мојот Господ, поради Кого се одреков од сè, и сé сметам за трици, само за да Го придобијам Христа“ (Филип. 3, 8 )

Потврда на ова што го велам е и фактот дека тој е единствениот Апостол кој ги допре раните Христови, а копнежот за богопознание на овој врховен Апостол, светата Црква го потврдува со одредување на првата недела по Воскресението како „Томина недела“ и со тоа на ист таков копнеж ги повикува сите свои чеда.

И денес можеме да се допреме до раните Христови секогаш кога ќе се потрудиме да ги исцелиме истите – духовно и телесно, кај еден од Неговите најмали браќа – дури и повеќе од Апостолот. Двојниот поздрав „мир вам“ со кој Богочовекот Христос ги поздравува Апостолите, првиот пат е да ги избави од стравот и вознемиреноста, а вториот пат за да ги избави од еуфоријата.

Колебливо е однесувањето на оние од првиот степен на духовниот развој – очистувањето на срцето од страстите и им треба мир, за разлика од стабилното однесување на просветлените или обожените – какви што се жените мироносици, кои го слушаат поздравот: „радувајте се“!

Christ is risen!

We will say again, Christ is the centre of our lives, and Christ’s resurrection is the greatest and most important event in the history of mankind. Without Christ’s resurrection, man is nothing, and without His resurrection life is only a shadow and a dream. But Christ was incarnate and became Man, and by His death and resurrection He gave man meaning and life again. That is why our life should be based on faith in Christ and His resurrection.

Many call themselves Christians, they are baptised, and they may hold some rituals and traditions in the Church, but their faith in Christ’s resurrection is weak and some do not even believe it. But they are not right. The event with the Holy Apostle Thomas confirms the truth of Christ’s resurrection. If there was not the Holy Apostle Thomas and his blissful “disbelief” they might have been right. But the humility of Christ and the zeal of the Holy Apostle Thomas break down any disbelief.

Христос воскресна!

Повторно ќе кажеме, Христос е центар на нашиот живот, а Христовото воскресение е најголемиот и најбитен настан во историјата на човештвото. Без Христовото воскресение човекот е ништо, а без Неговото воскрсение животот е само сенка и сон. Но Христос се воплоти и вочовечи, и со својата смрт и воскресение му даде повторно смисла и живот на човекот. Затоа нашиот живот треба да се базира на верата во Христос и Неговото воскресение.

Многумина се нарекуваат христијани, крстени се, а можеби и држат некои обреди и традиции во Црквата, но нивната вера во Христовото воскрeсение им е слаба, а некои и не веруваат. Но, не се во право. Настанот со Св. ап. Тома ја потврдува вистинитоста на Христовото воскресение. Да не беше Св. ап. Тома и неговото блажено “неверие”, можеби ќе имаа право, но смирението Христово и ревноста на Св. ап. Тома го рушат секое неверие.

The higher the goal a person usually sets for himself, the more he achieves. Thus, the Lord calls us to accomplish the highest goal: “You shall be perfect, just as your Father in heaven is perfect” (Matthew 5, 48). This means, we should not be satisfied only with our faith in God, but we should also strive for the knowledge of God – so that, from the experience of communion with Him, we may know Him.

The desire of the Apostle Thomas to touch the wounds of the resurrected God-Man Jesus Christ is not an unbelief, but a natural and saving yearning of every man to know God by experience, and not just by simple belief and by reading books. Because, in particular, the intellectual knowledge of God itself does not bring us definite salvation, but most often brings us pride, divisions and downfall, while the knowledge of the reason (intellect) that arises from the experience of communion with God brings us humility and unity, in the Holy Eucharist of The Church.
