Refer: Mark 8:34 – 9:1

“Whoever desires to come after Me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross and follow Me.” (Mark 8:34).

The Cross of Christ is our voluntary and involuntary sufferings, which we endure with humility and gratitude for the communion with the God-Man Christ. Only these sufferings, not – any others.

When He tells us to deny ourselves, take up our cross, and follow Him, the Lord Jesus Christ calls us voluntarily to go through the three stages of our spiritual development:

– Purification of the heart from the passions,

– Enlightenment of the mind, and

– Deification of the person.

Today is the beginning of our salvation and the revelation of the eternal mystery:

The Son of God becomes the Son of the Virgin, as Gabriel announces the good news.

That is why let us also cry to the Theotokos:

Rejoice, O Full of Grace, The Lord is with You!

(Troparion of the Annunciation)

When eleven years of service and abode of the Most-Holy Virgin in the temple of Jerusalem had passed, and fourteen years since Her birth, that is, when She entered Her fifteenth year of Her life, the priests told Her that, according to the Law, She could no longer remain in the temple, but ought to get engaged and get married. But to the great surprise of all the priests, the Most-Holy Virgin replied that She was devoted to God and that She wanted to remain a girl (Virgin) until death, without marrying anyone.

Then, by the providence and inspiration of God, the High Priest Zacharias, the father of Saint John the Baptist, together with the other priests, gathered twelve unmarried people from the tribe of David, to entrust to one of them the Virgin Mary, in order to take care of Her, and to preserve Her girl-ship (virginity). She was entrusted to the old and righteous Joseph of Nazareth, who was also Her relative. At Joseph’s home, the Most-Holy Virgin continued to live as she did at Solomon’s temple.

Денес е почеток на нашето спасение и откривање на вечната тајна:

Синот Божји станува Син на Дева и Гаврил објавува блага вест.

Затоа и ние да повикаме кон Богородица:

Радувај се, Благодатна, Господ е со Тебе!

Кога навршиле единаесет години од пребивањето и служењето на Пресветата Дева во Ерусалимскиот храм, и четиринаесет години од раѓањето, односно кога стапила во петнаесеттата година од животот, свештениците Ѝ соопштиле дека, според Законот, Таа веќе не може да остане во храмот, туку треба да се вери и да стапи во брак. Но, на големо изненадување за сите свештеници Пресветата Дева одговорила дека Таа се посветила на Бог и дека сака да остане девојка до смртта, без да стапи во брак со кого било. Тогаш, по промисла и вдахновение Божјо, првосвештеникот Захариј, таткото на свети Јован Предвесник, заедно со останатите свештеници, собрал дванаесет неоженети луѓе од Давидовото племе, за на еден од нив да му се довери Дева Марија на чување на Нејзиното девојчинство и на грижа за Неа. Таа му била врачена на стариот и праведен Јосиф од Назарет, кој Ѝ бил и роднина. Во домот на Јосиф, Пресветата Дева продолжила да живее исто како и во Соломоновиот храм.

Гледате ли колку ни треба мека храна, та евангелскиот исечок од денот на Благовест да почнува со бременоста на света Елисавета во поодмината возраст и останатото што следува (види: Лука 1, 24–38).

Што е тврда храна?

Тврда храна е дека на Онаа Која е почесна од херувимите и безмерно пославна од серафимите не Ѝ требаше од ангел,  па макар бил тоа и архангел Гаврил, да ја дознава вистината за воплотувањето од Светиот Дух на Синот Божји во Неа.

Се сеќавате што сум ви говорел: веќе на вториот степен од духовниот развој – просветлување на умот, се здобиваме со одредена слобода пред Бог. Тогаш не само што нашите главни планови често ќе се совпаѓаат со Божјите планови, иако не секогаш во она време што ние го очекуваме, туку веќе го добиваме дарот Божји, сами, во своето срце – во областа на Царството Небесно, да го подготвиме она што ќе сакаме да ни се случи.

Ви говорам за благодатниот подвиг на аскетската умно-срдечна молитва.

Колку повеќе сето ова важи за недостижниот исихастичко-молитвен подвиг што Пресветата го имала во Светињата на Светињите од старозаветниот Храм.

Do you see how we are in need of “soft food” in that the Gospel extract which is read on the day of the Annunciation begins with Saint Elizabeth’s conception in old age and the rest which was to come (see Luke 1: 24–38).

What is solid food?

Solid food is, that the One Who is more honourable than the cherubim and immeasurably more glorious than the seraphim did not have need of an angel, even if that were the Archangel Gabriel, to learn the truth about the incarnation from the Holy Spirit of the Son of God in Her.

Do you remember what I have told you: at the second stage of spiritual development – enlightenment of the mind, we gain a certain freedom before God. Then, not only will our main plans often coincide with God’s plans, although not always at the time we expect, but now we receive the gift of God, ourselves, in our heart – in the realm of the Kingdom of Heaven, in order to prepare that which we desire for us.

I am talking to you about the graceful struggle (endeavour) of ascetic prayer of the mind in the heart.

How much more all of this is brought to bear on the unattainable hesychastic-prayer struggle that the Most-Holy Theotokos had in the Holy of Holies within the Temple of the Old Testament.
